Cuqui's departure comes amid a period of change for the division , which troubleshoots issues for the millions of merchants using the e-commerce platform. "I look forward to continuing this work in lock step with our incredible crew of 1000s of Support Advisors and team members." The division is also working on a new, enterprise level of support as more large merchants have joined Shopify. Shopify is working on a customer support offering for enterprise merchants. In June, Shopify announced that its one-click checkout Shop Pay would be made available to non-Shopify enterprise merchants through Commerce Components. The 2023 version of the report evaluated Shopify Plus and ranked the platform at the top of its peers in terms of execution. Merchant success managers are Shopify employees who consult with Plus merchants about launching and running their online stores. There's a big problem with Shopify's calculator for the true cost of meetings. Shopify's COO says the salary indicator on each meeting just reflects the average salary for the role. That means the meeting's cost won't be accurate in the first place: It's just an estimate. And Shopify has swooped in with what it says is a solution: airing the cost of meetings to scare bosses into scheduling fewer of them. If there's an hour-long meeting, everyone's hourly salary will be factored into a Google calendar invite.

Shopify is trying to discourage useless meetings with a tool that estimates the cost of employees' time. The calendar tool calculates meeting costs based on employee pay data, meeting duration, and attendees. The strategy is part of Shopify's push to purge thousands of unnecessary meetings. Shopify has introduced a new tool to help employees find out — and encourage them to cut back on non-crucial meetings. "No one at Shopify would expense a $500 dinner," Shopify COO Kaz Nejatian, who built the program, told Bloomberg.

But Shopify's logistics acquisitions, which came with around 550 more staff altogether, started to look like dead weight after the shine of the initial announcements wore off. By the beginning of 2023, the attitude toward logistics inside Shopify had shifted to palpable frustration, four people who worked for Shopify's logistics division said. Lance McMillan/Toronto Star via Getty ImagesIndependent of logistics, Shopify saw massive cultural shifts in the past several years. One core tenet of Shopify's work culture is "default to open," meaning it values transparency and sharing information with employees. The letter referred to Shopify's logistics work of the past four years as a "side quest" that distracted the company from its "main quest."

Shopify announced Thursday that it is cutting 20% of staff and selling off its logistics business. Shopify's CEO Tobi Lütke announced early Thursday that the company is cutting 20% of its workforce and selling the majority of its logistics business to supply chain technology company Flexport. It's the right thing for Shopify but it negatively affects many team members who we admire and love working with. Analysts and insiders had also been expecting a major change to Shopify's logistics division, Insider reported Wednesday. But 6 River Systems, a warehouse automation and robotics company Shopify purchased in 2019 for $450 million, is being sold to UK grocery firm Ocado for an undisclosed sum.
Shopify declared a "Code Yellow" calling for improvements to the way its Support teams work. Shopify executives have declared a "Code Yellow" for its Support organization, saying it needs to improve customer service levels "that have deteriorated beyond acceptable ranges." Clovis Cuqui, vice president for merchant acceleration at Shopify, posted an explanation of the Code Yellow on Shopify's Workplace web page on March 1. Code Yellow is a preemptive intervention to make sure we don't ever need a Code Red." Shopify's Support teams have long been a source of pride for the Canadian e-commerce company.
Shopify is making changes to its managerial structure that will likely result in fewer middle managers, "flattening" its organizational structure. Starting in mid-March, employees will choose to become either a full-time manager or a "crafter," as Shopify calls individual contributors. Silas added that Shopify expects to have fewer managers overall, referring to the change as a "flattening" of the organization. Shopify also removed all employee meetings that were scheduled for Wednesdays and limited large team events to specific hours on Thursdays. Analysts say Shopify's products offer a much better value than their competitors'. He added that many merchants pay more in fees for third-party apps and add-ons than they do for a Shopify subscription. With those fees in mind, an increase to the monthly subscription fee would seem relatively small, Pfau argued. Luria said that it's possible Shopify's price hikes could "upset smaller merchants for whom this is a big expenditure," particularly amid inflation and economic uncertainty. Shopify's price hikes come as the company makes changes to its leadership team.
The decision was announced Tuesday as part of a plan called "Chaos Monkey 2023." The company said that Tuesday's "chaos monkey" changes were primarily intended to improve employees' ability to focus on their work. Two employees said they worried that the Slack changes in particular would reduce transparency and make their jobs more difficult. Shopify previously had dozens of public channels for special interests like photography and cryptocurrency. "And removing the public channels that are not directly work-related is another measure to weed out people, control narratives and people's conversations, and limit their opinions."
New York CNN Business —One tech company is trying to help its employees kick off the new year with a clean slate, or at least an emptier calendar. As part of its announcement, Shopify said it will delete nearly 10,000 events from employee calendars, thereby clearing up over 76,500 hours. Slashing meetings could help make the company more efficient while also potentially boosting morale for some workers. “No one joined Shopify to sit in meetings,” Nejatian wrote. Shopify is also pushing a “no judgment zone,” urging employees to cancel meetings as they see fit.
It shut down public Slack channels and deleted all meetings with more than two people. Shopify removed each employee from every existing public channel on the company's Slack workspace, deleted the message history from those public channels, and capped each channel at 150 members. Shopify previously had dozens of public channels for these special interests. Employees logged on to work Tuesday to see that they had been removed from all public Slack channels. But the company said that Tuesday's "chaos monkey" changes were primarily intended to improve employees' ability to focus on their work.
After seeing explosive sales and revenue growth during the earlier days of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Canadian e-commerce company saw its business come back down to earth this year. Shopify employees are granted restricted stock units, or RSUs, in addition to their base salaries. MayOn May 2, Shopify announced plans to acquire e-commerce fulfillment startup Deliverr for more than $2 billion. The acquisition was intended to help Shopify merchants offer one and two-day shipping to their customers. On December 15, Shopify announced that it was doubling down on its sustainability efforts by investing $11 million in carbon removal projects.
But it also brought in a new CFO, COO, and chief human resources officer. Shopify's roller coaster of a year left the company adjusting to a new normal of tightened e-commerce spending. It also made some major personnel changes, welcoming a new CFO, chief human resources officer, chief revenue officer, and more. Several high-ranking executives overseeing critical functions left the company in 2022, including vice presidents leading engineering, communications, and growth teams. Longtime COO Toby Shannan also left Shopify after more than a decade at the company; he was replaced by Kaz Nejatian, who was promoted from vice president of product at Shopify.

POS Go will also help Shopify bring in more revenue through its merchant solutions line of business. The launch reflects Shopify's recent emphasis on physical retail and revenue-generating merchant services like payment processing. Expanding point-of-sale offerings could also help Shopify grow its merchant services revenue, both through the sale of POS hardware and recurring revenue from processing more transactions. Merchant services will most likely remain a priority for the company going forward. Kaz Nejatian, who was formerly Shopify's vice president of product for merchant services, was promoted to chief operating officer earlier this month.

Most of Shopify's C-suite has been replaced in the past two years. "There was some hope that they would reprioritize software, whether it's marketing-automation software or customer-engagement software," he added. The former chief technology officer Jean-Michel Lemieux, chief legal officer Joe Frasca, and chief talent officer Brittany Forsyth all departed in 2021. The chief product officer Craig Miller left the company a few months before that, in fall 2020. Shopify has yet to formally fill the chief product officer role, whose responsibilities Lütke said he would take on in the wake of Miller's departure.
